ABSTRACT: This study investigates the barriers to apprenticeship participation in vocational programs, focusing on the factors that hinder students from engaging in practical training opportunities. The objectives were to (1) identify the key barriers to apprenticeship participation, (2) evaluate the impact of these barriers on vocational education outcomes, and (3) propose strategies to enhance apprenticeship participation among vocational students. A survey design was chosen to collect data from students, educators, and industry partners, providing a comprehensive understanding of the issues at hand. The sample size included 200 participants, selected through a purposive sampling technique to ensure relevant insights from those directly involved in apprenticeship programs. The case study focused on Lagos State, Nigeria, known for its diverse industrial sector and vocational training institutions. Findings indicated that barriers such as lack of awareness, limited access to apprenticeship opportunities, and socio-economic constraints significantly hindered students' participation in apprenticeship programs. Strategies proposed to address these barriers included increasing awareness through targeted campaigns, enhancing collaboration between vocational institutions and industries to create more apprenticeship opportunities, and providing financial support to students. It was recommended that policymakers and educational institutions should work together to implement these strategies to improve apprenticeship participation rates and enhance the overall quality of vocational training.
